Billionaire Aliko Dangote has honored the late Herbert Wigwe, former Group Chief Executive Officer of Access Holdings, by naming the 120km road leading to his refinery in Lagos after him.
The decision was announced at a special event titled 'Celebrating Herbert Wigwe – A Professional Legacy' held at Eko Hotel, Lagos. Dangote praised Wigwe's significant contributions to the refinery project and described him as a dependable mentee and supporter.
Wigwe, along with his wife, son, and a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group, Abimbola Ogunbanjo, tragically passed away in a helicopter crash near the border between California and Nevada on February 9.
Various dignitaries attended the event, including the Minister of Finance, President of African Development Bank, Lagos State Governor, and other notable figures from the banking and business sectors.
Ken Opara, President of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria, offered condolences and reflected on Wigwe's extensive career, highlighting his courage and significant contributions to the banking industry in Nigeria.
Segun Agbaje, Group CEO of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, also praised Wigwe's accomplishments, describing him as a colleague, friend, brother, and competitor.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu,
commended Wigwe's achievements in the banking sector and recalled his
instrumental role in addressing challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
