WHO Launches $1.5 Billion Appeal to Tackle Global Health Crises in 2025

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a $1.5 billion Health Emergency Appeal for 2025 to fund life-saving health interventions worldwide.

In a statement on Thursday, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus highlighted the urgent need to address 42 ongoing health emergencies, including 17 classified as Grade 3 crises—the most severe requiring top-level response.

“Conflicts, climate change, epidemics, and displacement are combining to create an unprecedented global health crisis, leaving 305 million people in dire need of humanitarian aid in 2025,” Ghebreyesus said.

He emphasized that overstretched health systems and diminishing global financial resources necessitate this appeal to provide critical support to the most vulnerable populations.

The appeal focuses on empowering communities, promoting equity, and building preparedness for future challenges. Dr. Ghebreyesus stressed that the initiative is crucial for saving lives, upholding the right to health, and offering hope in seemingly hopeless situations.

WHO’s emergency response includes delivering care in conflict zones like Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the occupied Palestinian territories. 

The funds will be used to prioritize essential medical supplies, treat malnutrition, support maternal and child health, conduct vaccination campaigns, and provide mental health assistance to trauma-affected populations.

The appeal also underscores the compounded impact of four global challenges: climate change, conflict, displacement, and disease outbreaks, which are fueling deeper and longer-lasting health crises.

The WHO’s outlined plan includes specific priorities and funding requirements for each Grade 3 emergency. 

With donor and partner support, WHO aims to continue its pivotal role in health emergencies while adhering to international humanitarian law principles, ensuring no one is left behind even in the most challenging circumstances.
