The Republican-majority US House of Representatives passed a bill on Tuesday aimed at prohibiting transgender athletes from participating in girls' and women’s sports at schools and universities receiving federal funding.
The bill stipulates that sex is determined “solely by a person’s reproductive biology and genetics at birth,” effectively barring transgender students from joining sports teams designated for women or girls.
While the legislation succeeded in the House with 218 votes, including support from two Democrats, it is unlikely to pass in the Senate due to the chamber's 60-vote threshold for most legislation.
Polarizing Debate
The bill comes amid intensified political battles over LGBTQ rights, with Republicans using transgender participation in youth sports as a focal point in the lead-up to the 2024 elections. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to eliminate what he calls “transgender lunacy.”
Advocacy groups have condemned the legislation. Equality California criticized it as “another effort to deny transgender youth the dignity and respect they deserve.”
