UN Urges Nigeria to Take Bold Steps Against Climate Change

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has called on nations, including Nigeria, to adopt bold and ambitious strategies to tackle climate change effectively.

On Monday, this appeal was highlighted in a statement issued by Oluseyi Soremekun, the National Information Officer of the United Nations Information Centre.

During her two-day official visit to Nigeria, Mohammed emphasized the importance of enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to secure a sustainable and livable future for the planet.

In the course of her visit, she engaged in high-level discussions with Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Minister of Finance Wale Edun, and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.

"Member States, including Nigeria, with the support of the UN and other stakeholders, must deliver more ambitious Nationally Determined Contributions to ensure a safer and more sustainable future for both people and the planet," Mohammed stated.

Additionally, she held meetings with Dr. Omar Touray, President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), and the UN Country Team led by Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mohamed Malick Fall.

Accompanied by Leonardo Simão, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohammed addressed pressing regional concerns, including climate action, food security, and solutions for internal displacement.

Mohammed also highlighted the need to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to foster economic integration and strengthen regional partnerships.

She reaffirmed the United Nations' commitment to supporting Nigeria through the UN and Nigeria Cooperation Framework (2023–2027). Mohammed assured that the UN would continue collaborating closely with the Nigerian government to address development challenges and create a sustainable future, ensuring no one is left behind.
