Edo CP Warns Officers Against Random Unauthorised Phone Searches

The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Betty Enekpen-Otimeyin, has issued a stern warning to officers of the command against extorting citizens and conducting arbitrary phone searches.

Enekpen-Otimeyin, who assumed office as the 49th CP of Edo State on Monday at the police headquarters in Benin City, emphasized that such actions are only permitted if deemed necessary during an active investigation.

Highlighting directives from the Inspector General of Police, she said, “The IG has made it clear that we do not need to conduct random phone searches. However, when specific issues arise requiring information verification, it may be allowed.”

The CP also outlined her commitment to tackling gender-based violence, protecting women and children, and ensuring the enforcement of laws like the Child Rights Act.

“My focus is on reducing crime significantly, addressing extortion, and prioritizing cases of violence against women and children,” she added.

Extensive Career Path

Enekpen-Otimeyin shared her extensive career journey, which began in Bauchi State in 1992. She has held various positions across multiple commands in the country.

“I started in Bauchi State, moved to Plateau, and served as a Divisional Police Officer in several divisions. Later, I was transferred to Edo State, where I worked in about 10 divisions and also served as Officer in Charge of Conflict Resolution.”

She further detailed her experience, stating, “I’ve served as an Assistant Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State and at the Nigerian Port Authority in administration. I was an Area Commander in Rivers and Imo States before being promoted to Deputy Commissioner and posted to Zone 5, Benin, overseeing administration.”

Enekpen-Otimeyin noted that before her current posting, she served at the Force Intelligence Department in Abuja following her promotion to Commissioner of Police.
