Chinese start-up DeepSeek has disrupted the global tech industry with its AI chatbot, which has skyrocketed to the top of the Apple Store’s download charts. The chatbot’s performance has drawn comparisons to top American counterparts, leaving industry insiders astonished.
Top Performer in AI
DeepSeek, developed in Hangzhou, a hub for Chinese tech innovation, offers features akin to Western AI systems. The chatbot can generate song lyrics, draft personal development plans, and create dinner recipes based on available ingredients. It supports multiple languages, excelling in both English and Chinese.
However, like other Chinese AI systems such as Baidu’s Ernie Bot, it avoids politically sensitive topics, steering conversations away from issues like Xi Jinping or Xinjiang policies. Despite these limitations, DeepSeek’s ability to write complex code and solve advanced problems has impressed experts.
Alexandr Wang, CEO of Scale AI, remarked, “DeepSeek is either the top-performing or on par with the best American models,” a surprising feat given its development constraints.

DeepSeek was created using a fraction of the resources employed by its Western competitors. The company spent just $5.6 million to train the model, a stark contrast to the billions invested by US tech giants.
This achievement has shaken the industry, with major US and Japanese tech firms seeing stock declines. Nvidia, the leading supplier of AI hardware, saw its shares drop over 3% on Wall Street, while Japan’s SoftBank experienced an 8% loss.
Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen dubbed DeepSeek’s rise as AI’s “Sputnik moment,” likening it to the Soviet satellite launch that triggered the Cold War space race.
Open-Source Revolution
Unlike proprietary models from OpenAI or Meta, DeepSeek is open source, allowing anyone to access, study, and modify its code. This transparency has earned praise, with Nvidia’s senior research manager, Jim Fan, stating, “DeepSeek keeps the original mission of OpenAI alive—open and empowering frontier research.”
DeepSeek claims to “top the leaderboard among open-source models” and rival closed-source giants globally. Scale AI’s Wang described the development as “a wake-up call for America.”

China has set its sights on becoming the global leader in AI by 2030, with plans to invest billions in the sector. DeepSeek’s success suggests Chinese firms are overcoming the barriers imposed by US restrictions on advanced chip technologies.
The chatbot’s creator, Liang Wenfeng, recently shared the stage with Premier Li Qiang, underscoring the company’s rapid ascent. DeepSeek’s success has also trended on Chinese social media, drawing tens of millions of views on platforms like Weibo.
