Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State locked out numerous civil servants on Wednesday during a surprise visit to the state secretariat, where he found only a few workers present.
The governor’s convoy arrived at around 10:35 a.m. to inspect ongoing renovation projects, including the installation of new lighting systems. Security personnel promptly locked the gates, preventing hundreds of latecoming civil servants from entering.
During his tour of various ministries, Governor Alia expressed disappointment upon discovering the absence of some commissioners and senior officials.
Addressing the workers gathered at the gate on his way out, the governor criticized their poor attitude toward their responsibilities, warning them of the consequences of such behavior.

“With actions like these, you create a vicious cycle for your families,” Alia stated. “You cheat not only the system but also yourselves, preventing any real progress in your lives.
My role is to serve those who don’t even realize I am governor, and those who may never recognize me."
He further cautioned, “I have the power to identify you and take action, including termination. I am speaking to you not just as a governor but also as a priest, warning you of the dangers of this negligence.”
The governor emphasized the collective responsibility of government workers, urging them to take their roles seriously for the sake of those who depend on them.
“It’s not about me—it’s about all of you. Government is a shared responsibility, like running a family where rules must be followed. I am not frustrated, but I don’t want you to face ruin,” he added.
Governor Alia concluded by appealing to the workers to prioritize their duties, if not for themselves, then for the welfare of the people relying on them.
