The Anambra State House of Assembly has officially passed a bill into law aimed at bolstering internal security and maintaining order within the state. The legislation establishes the Anambra State Agunechemba security outfit and provides a framework for its operations.
During Thursday’s plenary session, the bill progressed through its first, second, and third readings before receiving final approval.
Speaker Somtochukwu Udeze commended the lawmakers for their diligent efforts over recent months to develop a comprehensive response to the state’s security challenges. He also acknowledged Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his unwavering commitment to ensuring a safe and crime-free Anambra.
The newly established Agunechemba security outfit is designed to enhance safety across all 21 local government areas of the state.

It will operate at three distinct levels—community, local government, and state—with the state-level command serving as the central coordinating authority.
Majority Leader Ikenna Ofodeme, representing Ekwusigo Constituency, highlighted the outfit’s proactive role in addressing criminal activities.
He stated, “Anambra will not be a safe haven for crime or insecurity. The Agunechemba security team will provide vital intelligence on criminal activities and take proactive steps to curb crimes statewide.”
The security outfit’s mandate includes tackling pressing issues such as kidnapping, banditry, drug abuse, cultism, armed robbery, and other violent crimes.
Lawmakers such as Jude Ngobili (Ihiala Constituency One), Ejike Okechukwu (Anaocha Constituency Two), and Anayo Okpaleke (Aguata Constituency One) emphasized the outfit’s significance in protecting lives and property across Anambra.
The bill is scheduled to come into effect on Friday, January 17, 2025.
