OAU Lion Kills Zookeeper While Feeding

On Monday, a 9-year-old male lion killed a zookeeper while feeding the wild cats in their den at Obafemi Awolowo University's Zoological Garden in the city of Ile. The victim, Mr Olabode Olawuyi, a Veterinary Technologist, is said that he had been in charge of the Zoological Garden for over ten years.

Abiodun Olarewaju, the university's Public Relations Officer, confirmed the occurrence in a statement released on Monday.

He stated, "Mr Olawuyi has been caring for the lions since they arrived on campus about 9 years ago, but tragically, a male lion killed the individual who had been feeding them."

"The other members of staff that were present at the scene of the incident did all that within their power to rescue their boss but the wild cat was already causing severe fatalities." Olarewaju stated that upon hearing the sad news, the management team, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof Adebayo Bamire, abruptly ended an ongoing meeting for a right away assessment.

"When Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon BAMIRE arrived, the Acting Director of the University Health and Medical Centre, Dr. Tirimisiyu Olatunji, informed him that all emergency care and medical efforts to preserve the victim's life had failed.

"Saddened by this tragic event, the aggressive Lion was euthanized.

"The University management has sent a delegation to the widow and children of the deceased, asking them to take solace in God who gives life yet has the power to take life," he went on to say. The college spokesperson stated that management had ordered a thorough investigation into the incident's immediate and remote causes.

In February 2018, a lion mauled a 22-year-old woman to death at a private game lodge near South Africa's capital, Pretoria. The victim was assaulted by a lioness near Hammanskraal, about 45 kilometers (30 miles) north of Pretoria, around 0900 GMT.

"When Netcare 911 paramedics arrived, bystanders started resuscitation. Unfortunately, the victim suffered serious wounds and died at the scene," said Nick Dollman, spokesman for Netcare 911 ambulance service.

According to the family, a South African conservationist was killed by hand-reared lions in August 2022. West Mathewson, 69, was walking two white lionesses when one of them brutally murdered him unexpectedly.

The incident occurred on the premises of the family-owned Lion Tree Top Lodge in South Africa's northern Limpopo province.
