The Lagos State Government has announced its intention to take legal action against pedestrians who cross major highways within the state, considering such actions as offenses. The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this declaration via his official communication platform on Sunday.
Wahab emphasized that the state's Environmental Safety Corps, commonly known as the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), along with other relevant agencies, have been directed to promptly enforce this directive. He reiterated that crossing highways constitutes a violation of the law in Lagos State, and authorized personnel have been instructed to apprehend offenders and initiate legal proceedings against them without delay.
Furthermore, the commissioner urged residents to utilize pedestrian bridges installed across the state instead of risking their safety by crossing highways.
This directive comes in the wake of reports, as documented by PUNCH Metro in September 2023, highlighting the perilous behavior of residents in Lagos and Ogun States who frequently disregard pedestrian bridges and opt to dash across busy highways, exposing themselves to the danger of oncoming vehicles.
