The Independent National Electoral
Commission (INEC) has halted bye-elections in numerous constituencies and
polling units nationwide due to disturbances and irregularities.
Sam Olumekun, INEC's National Commissioner
and head of the Information and Voter Education Committee, disclosed this on
Saturday, February 3, during elections across 26 states and 80 municipalities.
Olumekun highlighted specific instances of
disruptions, such as in the Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State,
where elections in two units were stopped because thugs stole all voting
materials.
In Enugu State, the voting process in all
eight polling units of the Enugu South 1 State Constituency was ceased because
the original result sheets were not available for voter verification before the
start of the polls.
In Kano State's Kunchi/Tsanyawa State
Constituency, election activities were suspended in all 10 polling units in
Kunchi LGA due to thug attacks, vandalism, and disturbances.
He mentioned that this suspension is in
accordance with Section 24(3) of the Electoral Act, 2022, and that further
decisions about the affected areas will be communicated following the
Commission's Monday meeting. INEC has also called upon security bodies to look
into these incidents and committed to rigorously investigating any misconduct
by its officials.
