Professor Saheed Aderinto, a scholar based in the United States, has unveiled a documentary dedicated to the memory of the late fuji music icon, Dr. Sikiru Ayinde Barrister.
During the Barrister Festival (BarryFest) organized by various Barrister fan groups worldwide in Ibadan, Professor Aderinto announced the release of his documentary. He disclosed that filming for the documentary, titled "Mr. Fuji: Barry Wonder," commenced in 2021 across multiple locations in Nigeria and the United States, where he serves as a lecturer.
Professor Aderinto emphasized that the documentary is not intended for commercial gain but rather to immortalize Barrister's significant contribution to the development of a distinct genre within Nigerian indigenous music. He underscored the documentary's purpose as preserving Barrister's legacy and enhancing global awareness of the fuji genre, aiming to introduce Barrister and fuji music into academic spheres where they are currently overlooked.
The event, held at the Ilaji Hotel and Resorts in Akanran, Ibadan, attracted notable figures such as Mutalubi Adebayo, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, who lauded Barrister's enduring influence. The two-day festival included various activities such as a Jummat service, the unveiling of Barrister's Cenotaph, a Gala Night, live musical performances, and the presentation of awards.
Additionally, Professor Jeleel Ojuade, the Vice-Chancellor of Ojaja University in Kwara State, delivered a scholarly presentation exploring Barrister's evolution as a prominent figure in Nigeria's indigenous music landscape.
