During heavy rainfall on Thursday, a three-story building located at Ita Faaji Market in the Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State collapsed, sparking panic in the community. The incident occurred around 9 am.
According to information gathered by GoodNews Online, the building was undergoing renovation when it collapsed. Fortunately, the construction workers who were on site at the time managed to escape unharmed.
Margaret Adeseye, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, confirmed the incident in a statement obtained by a correspondent. She mentioned that the collapsed building, situated at 24 Binuyo Street off Ita Faaji Market, was undergoing renovation when it collapsed. Adeseye also stated that personnel from the Ebute Elefun Fire Station and other state emergency responders were present at the scene to provide assistance.
The cause of the collapse remains unknown, as Adeseye noted, and recovery operations have been completed.
This incident brings to mind a similar tragedy that occurred in September 2023 when an 80-year-old woman lost her life as a staircase of a building collapsed in the Oyingbo area of the state. The Lagos State Building Control Agency expressed condolences to the victims of the recent collapse and attributed the incident to non-compliance with vacation notices issued to occupants of the building.
Emergency responders swiftly arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations following the collapse.
