The Nigerian Police Force recently presented six individuals, four women and two men, to the Tinubu Chief Magistrate’s Court, accusing them of assaulting and slandering well-known Nollywood star, Lizzy Anjorin-Lawal. The accused, identified as Qudus Jokogbola, Suru Olawale, Edu Shakirat, Fausat Mohammed, Kafayat Ahmed, and Opere Simiat Morenike, were charged with the attack that allegedly took place on February 5, 2024, at the Oba Akintoye Market in Lagos Island.
During the court session led by Magistrate A. A. Paul, the prosecution's lawyer, Sola Samuel, stated that the accused, together with two others currently evading capture, orchestrated a plan that resulted in physical harm to Anjorin-Lawal, thereby disturbing public order. The offences, according to Samuel, are in violation of specific sections of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015 and are subject to penalties under the same statutes.
Despite the serious allegations, all defendants denied any wrongdoing. Their lawyer, Ade Oshodi, highlighted their roles as vendors and requested the court's leniency in bail conditions. The prosecutor acknowledged that bail was within the court's purview but emphasized the importance of conditions that would guarantee their appearance at subsequent proceedings.
Magistrate Paul set the bail at N200,000 each, with similar surety requirements, including residency in Lagos and proof of tax contributions to the state. Until these conditions are satisfied, the accused will be held by the Nigerian Correctional Services. The next court date is scheduled for March 11, where the case will continue.
